How Warm are your Windows? Wise up now & Save ££££s with Mr Misty's Top Tips

If your windows are hemorrhaging heat, they’ll be costing you ££££s. As energy bills soar, Mr Misty alerts us to the issues and how to sort them.

Beware single glazed windows!

Why double and triple glazing makes sense

Just look at the thermal imaging pictures! In comparison with insulated double glazed windows and insulated walls, single glazed windows lose loads of heat. Whether your single glazed windows are regular casements, sliding sash or tilt and turn in style and even if your home is a listed building or in a conservation area, it is possible to install an improved glazing solution to keep more of the expensive heat you’re paying for within your home.

When it comes to glazing, the following will all have a role to play:

  • Manufacture of the glass itself. Energy efficient glass has a low e-coating to help keep heat in and cold air out
  • Thickness of the glass panes
  • Thickness of cavity between the 2 or 3 panes in double or triple glazed units. Price-wise, triple glazing may cost between 20-30% more than double glazed units, but the upgrade can be worth it. The lower the U value of the windows, the better the energy efficiency.
  • Air gap  This is the important bit  - it should be about 20mm in double glazing and 2 x 16mm in triple glazing. It can also be upgraded with a gas such as argon which insulates better due to its lower moisture content, hence reducing risk of condensation.

Have a whole set of single glazed windows? If the costs of replacing with double or triple glazed units is prohibitive, then don’t worry - secondary glazing can be a really cost effective and is actually the top performing option. It’s great for period homes too where changing the windows may simply not be a permitted option.

Misted windows are cold or leaky windows

Get blown windows with degrading seals sorted

Misting in existing double glazed windows or condensation on the inside of the window is a tell-tale sign of a cold window. Misting and condensation does not occur when a double and triple glazed window is performing as it should.

Condensation or misting between the panes indicates that the seal between the  panes has degraded and needs replacing.  Regrettably, there’s no easy fix, but the good news is that the  sealed units can be replaced without replacing the whole frames.

It’s also worth upgrading the ventilation if condensation is an issue, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Consider installing an extractor fan – or if you have one already, maybe a better one!

Heritage homes can be warm homes too

Versatile secondary glazing is best for energy efficiency

For listed homes or buildings in conservation areas, changing the windows simply isn’t an option as it will impact the character of the place negatively.

These days there are all sorts of brilliant woodgrain finishes available on standard and flush-fitting UPVC casement windows and sliding sash windows and aluminium windows can have more traditional styling and finishes. In some cases, these advances in windows technologies do offer an acceptable alternative to timber framed or steel framed/ Crittal windows in older properties.

Secondary glazing has been long established as an way to insulate your windows in a period property or heritage home as it does not change the original windows in any way, has a high performing insulating gap which is great for sound proofing too and can be unobtrusive to both the internal and external look of the fenestration.

Choice of permanent sliding or 'lift out' panels

In secondary glazing, the panes sit independently, in a new frame installed into the window reveal, positioned on the inside of the original window with a typical gap of c.100mm from the original. The glass is fitted as a lift out panel or to slide vertically or horizontally, but there are a range of options to suit the style of the property and your ventilation needs.

If the windows in your heritage home are wonky, don’t worry, Mr Misty can still install secondary glazing which will cut your energy bills and reduce traffic noise too.
